  1. A few days late, but this guy is totally worth the wait.. Our June member of the month is our honorary Hungarian, Erno Hajos! 
    Erno does so much for us behind the scenes, including all of our t-shirt and graphic designs, as well as being a huge active part of our community, and its always either competing or supporting at competitions. Always an hour early to class to warm up, and doing extras after class, is just a standard day for Erno! 
    Heres a few words from Erno:

    I’ll never forget my very first day in the CrossFit Mt Eden gym. After my first wod I was dying on the ground and thought, “no chance Im coming back here, this is crazy”. I remember I cursed a lot, a lot lot…it’s been nearly 3 years by now 😀 (8th August 2014)
    A friend of mine recommended CrossFit to me. He said CrossFit is the best sport he’s ever done; he also admit, I would never regret this

    One of my favourite aspects of CrossFit Mt Eden is the atmosphere, basically I love everything, the coaches, the members, the environment, the community… everything

    My favourite movements are my weaknesses. The biggest enemy – Olympic weightlifting 😀 especially the Snatch. Such a complex movement, it’s a long term learning for me.

    I love the long wods, such as Murph – it’s brutal and I love it! 😀 

    The most important thing I have learned from CrossFit that I’m much stronger mentally and physically than I ever thought before. Thanks to our coaches who show us how to be mentally, physically and nutritionally fit is a powerful life changing thing.

  2. CrossFit Intro Course

    Our next Intro Course kicks off next week.  This is 3 sessions that take you through the basic movements of CrossFit.  We will teach you how to lift safely, move well and have fun while doing it.

    The CrossFit Intro Course is a great way to get into exercise.  You don’t need any experience and can be at any fitness level as our world class coaches will take you through a supportive and entertaining intro course.

    Here are the details of our next intro course:
    Starting: Tuesday 9th May
    Cost: $75 special down from $99
    Days and Times:  Tuesday 6:30pm, Thursday 6:30pm & Saturday 9am

  3. April Member of the Month

    We have been a bit sneaky in not telling her that we are doing this, but our member of the month for April, is someone who is a HUGE part of our community, and very special to all of us. We want to recognise how truly incredible she is.  Theres been a lot going on behind the scenes in this lady’s life, but if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t have the slightest inkling, she still turns up to the gym every day with a big smile on her face, coaches our members incredibly and always has time to give; whether it be for a chat, or to answer any questions you have about training. 
    (If you haven’t guessed already!)- Our beautiful coach from CrossFit West Auckland, Kat Barrack!
    As I mentioned earlier, the past wee while hasn’t been the easiest for Kat. Her mum as been really sick, and on Wednesday next week, Kat and her mum are both going into surgery, where she is giving her mum one of her kidneys. 
    So you may not see her face for a little while, but Im sure she will be back into the gym, as soon as she’s recovered to start training hard again. We all wish you the best of luck and are sending our love to you and your mum. 
    We are so lucky to have you as part of our Health101 community Kat, and thank you for everything you do as part of the coaching team, and to all of our members who value you greatly.

  4. March Member of the Month

    Our March member of the month goes to the smiley Zara Hammond! Zara has been a member with us since September last year, and has taken CrossFit by the horns. She was convinced to jump into one of our Metcon Madness Teams to fill in and absolutely smoked it. We cant wait to see what you can do when you’re convinced to do more competitions this year Zara haha! 

    How long have you been CrossFitting and Why do you CrossFit?
    About 6 months now and I do CrossFit because it keeps me fit and makes me feel a million bucks! 

    What do you love about CrossFit/Health101?
    I love being able to test myself (both my body and my mind) every time I come to the gym. With the variety of classes and movements you know your going to get a good workout in! The community at Health101 is super supportive too, everyone pushes everyone regardless if they know them or not. Limits definitely get pushed everyday! 

    What’s your favorite movement? 
    Definitely the snatch! 

    What’s your favorite WOD? 
    Hmmm, anything that involve box jumps!! 

    What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
    CrossFit has definitely changed my mindset and bought a more healthy balance into my life. I also didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I do, being able to see so many changesyou just want to keep progressing and pushing to see what you can really do! 

    What is something that we don’t know about you?  (Interesting fact, accomplishment you are proud of, obscure/unique talent, funny story, etc.)
    I did Ballet for about 10 years when I was younger! 

  5. February Member of the Month

    You may have seen our February member of the month smashing workouts at Metcon Madness a few weekends ago, she has just submitted an awesome time for the first workout for the CrossFit Open and we are lucky enough to see her pushing hard every day she comes into the gym! 
    Kristy Jordan is one of our fabulous West Auckland members and congratulations on being our member of the month. Heres a little more below to get to know her: 

    How long have you been CrossFitting and Why do you CrossFit?
    I have been a member for about 2 years although a year of that my attendance has been pretty sporadic – A 3 month trip to Europe and full time study didn’t help!
    I do CrossFit to challenge myself and keep fit.

    What do you love about CrossFit/Health101?

    I love the members and coaches at Health101 everyone is so genuinely kind, caring and overall awesome!

    What’s your favourite movement?
    My favourite movement: Deadlifts! LOVE them  

    What’s your favourite workout? 
     I don’t have a favourite workout as such but anything with kettle bell swings and doubles under and ill be happy 

    What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
    My mobility and posture has improved a lot, before I was doing CrossFit I didn’t realise I even had a problem.

    What is something that we don’t know about you?
    I did gymnastics when I was a kid through to intermediate, not that is shows now haha! I am actually super uncoordinated.

  6. January Member of the Month

    We are already two weeks into February, but, better late than never to recognise our first member of the month for 2017! From Mount Eden, you will now see him smashing kipping pull ups like they’re nothing, David! 
    David has been a member with us since September last year, and has already come on in leaps and bounds in these short few months. We cant wait to see what 2017 has in store for you David. 

    Get to know David a little better below: 

    How long have you been CrossFitting and Why do you CrossFit?

    Just over 4 months. I do it to keep fit and feel good. After going to a normal gym and doing the old back/bi/chest/tri routines I got pretty bored and found it hard to motivate myself, so I stopped going. I wanted exercise that was more challenging and more satisfying. CrossFit is definitely the one for that. 

    What do you love about CrossFit/Health101?

    I love the constant variation in classes and movements. It never feels like you’re doing the same old workout day after day. Health101 coaches have been awesome. They know the individual members so know weights you’re capable of doing and what parts of your body will hurt with certain movements. This means they can recommend alternatives to avoid injury. It is a great environment to train in. 

    What’s your favorite movement? 

    Definitely the pull up. I couldn’t do one when it started so it gives me joy to do two in a row. 

    What’s your favorite WOD? 

    I love the longer ones. I Get a good sense of satisfaction when you complete them (or like in my case get to the time cap without passing out). The longest I’ve done is 12 days of christmas so its the winner at them moment. 

    What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

    I think just generally feeling healthier has been the biggest change. I didn’t think it would happen so fast but after only a few months I definitely feel fitter, healthier and have more energy. And even though my back still gets a bit sore, it is a million times better since doing crossfit. I can see why people get hooked on this. I certainly am. 

    What is something that we don’t know about you?  

    My toes are webbed…not really.

    The finals days of 2016 and our final Member of the month for the year! We hope you had a very Merry Christmas, and are looking forward to kick starting 2017 with you! 
    Our December member of the month was undeniably a top pick between us coaches, everyone has noticed her dedication and the improvements that have come hand in hand with that. 
    Nicole Margolius, congratulations! Lets see what more you can achieve in 2017.
    A few questions and answers from Nicole below: 

    How long have you been CrossFitting and Why do you CrossFit? 
    I’ve been CrossFitting since around June of this year (6 months) and I keep coming back because I love surprising myself with what I’m actually capable of doing. There are also so many different movements that it doesn’t get monotonous and your levels of skill is different for each that there is always something to improve.

    What do you love about CrossFit/Health101? 
    The CrossFit/Health101 community is UNBELIEVABLE! From the coaches to the members, no matter how hard the workout or how much I’m struggling I have a team of supporters behind me, encouraging me to push to my limits! There are no half efforts, everyone gives their everything with each WOD and we share each other’s pride in our achievements! 

    What’s your favorite movement?
     For Barbell work I enjoy the Clean and also quite enjoy Kettle Bell Clean and Jerk.

    What’s your favorite WOD?
     No specific WOD that I can think of as my best – Can exclude anything with burpees! I do enjoy partner WOD’s … I love not only working hard for myself but also working hard for someone else. It really motivates me.

    What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
    Surprisingly, although you’re physically pushing yourself, I have more energy now than I’ve ever had before. My family are seeing me at my best, motivated, engaged and more importantly healthy. Getting to the box in the mornings has gone from being a time-luxury I afforded myself to an absolute necessity to keep me balanced.

     What is something that we don’t know about you?  (Interesting fact, accomplishment you are proud of, obscure/unique talent, funny story, etc.). 
    When I was around 14/15, I used to do martial arts and received provincial colours for Kung Fu in South Africa. Needless to say most of those skills are dead and gone =)

  9. November Member of the Month

    Its the first day of December, AND THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER!! But lets not forget the month of November, and recognising our hugely deserving November Member of the Month.
    Congratulations Shane Dickson! (who probably won’t see this post until after the weekend, because this morning he informed me he is off fly-fishing for a long weekend 😉 )
    I asked Shane a few questions, so you fellow members can get to know him a little better. Turns out Shane has some sneaky dance moves we didn’t know about!

    How long have you been CrossFitting and Why do you CrossFit?
    Since Aug 2015 so 16 months. I CrossFit be strong through 50+ while I am doing other cool recreational “stuff”.

    What do you love about CrossFit/Health101?
    I love progressing, no matter how small the improvement.

    What’s your favorite movement?
    Hang Power Clean/Clean and Jerk

    What’s your favorite WOD?
    I actually like Murph because you get a pretty good idea of overall progression.

    What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
    I didn’t expect to be “hooked” as much as I am, and I have definitely changed my online purchasing habits!
    What is something that we don’t know about you?
    I danced National Rock and Roll Competitions when I was younger (much younger)
